![]() Dirty Protest theatre has commissioned six plays inspired by the music of Super Furry Animals from some of Wales' best writers for the festival. And singer and one time collaborator with Gruff Rhys, Lisa Jen will be writing her first ever play for the night. She will be joined by emerging writing talent from across Wales including Roger Williams, Brad Birch, Meredydd Barker, Angharad Blythe, Neil Bebber. Each writer has been given the same rules - write one short play (3-10 minutes long), write it in 4 weeks and use any track from the Super Furry Animals as inspiration. The performance on the opening night of Swn, Thursday October 21, will be the first time the Cardiff-based music festival has welcomed theatre into the three day event. Dirty Protest's Tim Price said, "We have always tried to treat the theatre we make like going to a gig. It's messy, immediate and in venues likes bars and clubs so it feels like the audience is part of a special one night performance. "With a great line up of writers and some great plays being delivered we're sure that this night for Swn will be just as rammed with people and discovering that an hour of plays can be just as relevant and fun as a gig." The theatre company, who have previously performed at Latitude Festival as well as sold out venues in Cardiff, have also asked writers and members of the public to write their own mini Super Furry Animal inspired playlets for the night. All five lines or less these mini plays will be performed alongside the other works in Milgi, Cardiff. Price added, "We are really lucky to have some of the best young playwrights in Wales writing for us for the night and I'm also looking forward to seeing what singer Lisa Jen will write as her first play." The Dirty Protest ethos which mixed award-winning and established writers with emerging talent and complete newcomers has been a highly successful one. From sold out performances in Cardiff bars and clubs to London's Roundhouse, audiences have been able to witness new work from writers like This is England 86's Jack Thorne, Gary Owen, Ed Thomas, Skins Lucy Kirkwood, Chloe Moss, Helen Raynor, Alan Harris, Kit Lambert (to name a few). Tickets for the one off Swn Dirty Protest will be available on the night of Thursday October 21st from Milgi at 6.30pm. Performance begins at 7.30pm Tickets cost £4/£2 with Swn stroller www.dirtyprotesttheatre.co.uk |
