Bringing a New Experience to Welsh Theatre

Bringing a New Experience to Welsh Theatre For the first time ever, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, the Welsh language national theatre, will stage a musical, which promises to bring a new experience to audiences throughout Wales in Spring 2011.

The National Company, which are based in Carmarthen, will stage an adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s controversial ‘Spring Awakening’ – called ‘Deffro’r Gwanwyn’ – which has been translated into Welsh by dramatist Dafydd James.

The musical portrays a group of young people experiencing puberty – some without any guidance from their parents. Their curiosity leads them down a dangerous path with devastating consequences for some, and for other it will change their lives forever.

The musical ‘Spring Awakening’ first opened its doors on Broadway in 2006, and since then it has received rave reviews worldwide and has won 7 Tony Awards in New York and 4 Olivier Awards in London – two of those by the young Welsh actors Aneurin Barnard and Iwan Rheon.

Elin Williams, Marketing Manager for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru said: “This project offers a new and exciting challenge for the Company and we look forward to be staging our first ever musical. The performance promises to be entertaining with a live orchestra and rock music.”

“Outreach work in schools and colleges has already begun and we hope to use innovative and different marketing techniques to attract a new audience into the theatre.”

Elen Bowman will direct the musical in her first outing with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. She said: “Even though the original play by Wedekind was written back in 1891, the themes are relevant to today’s youth. The way in which the play has been transformed into a musical is very appealing to a young audience and I very much hope that the audience will enjoy this challenging musical that they will remember for a long time.”

Further information about the tour and cast members will be announced shortly.
