Magic and Mayhem Comes to the Melville, Abergavenny

Magic and Mayhem Comes to the Melville, Abergavenny Gwent playwright, Charles Way’s intriguing and lyrical play Ill Met by Moonlight comes to the Melville Theatre, Abergavenny, on Friday 3 December.

Sadly, this will be the last community play from the popular theatre company Hijinx as a result of cuts in financial support from the Arts Council of Wales.

This beautiful production, set on the border of Wales and England, earned five-star reviews and played to packed houses during its UK tour.

It is the cusp of the 20th century, with rural superstition rife, when Gwarwyn-a-throt (Gat), a descendant of Puck, roams the countryside leaving a trail of mayhem in his wake.

He is the last of the mystical Bwca (the faerie “brownies” of Wales ) but they have somewhat nastier tempers than their cousins elsewhere!

So, with his shape-changing interference, he attempts to thwart the growing love between two lonely country people.

The results of his malicious meddling are both hilarious and tragic. Will he be triumphant, or will love and integrity win?

Charles Way’s play is described as “a script of great beauty and skill, a passionate tale of love and magic” in a Guardian review of Hijinx’s previous production which earned it the BBC Wales Arts Award for Company of the Year.

Charles also directs the play which stars Michael Wagg - who played the title role in last year’s Gulliver which Hijinx also brought to Abergavenny - and Katie Owen who audiences will recognise from Gwent Theatre’s Wounded Angel and The Moon Dragon.

Ill Met By Moonlight is at 7.30pm, Friday 3 December, Melville Theatre, Drama Centre, Penypound, Abergavenny NP7 5UD. Tickets £8 & £6 from the Borough Theatre, Abergavenny, 01873 850805
