Demonstration to Save Gwent Theatre
|
A demonstration to save Gwent Theatre was held at doors of the Riverfront Arts Centre, Newport where the Arts Council of Wales was holding its annual conference (Wed 17 November).
Supporters waved banners and gave leaflets to delegates calling for the council to reconsider its decision to halt funding to the popular theatre in education company.
Gwent Theatre takes productions and workshops to 22,000 children and young people in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen,
More than 4,000 people have also signed petitions to be delivered to the Welsh Assembly later this month.
Gregg Taylor, Chair of Gwent Theatre, said: “The Arts Council is destroying one of the great success stories for the arts in South Wales.
“Politicians from all parties are now questioning how on earth the Council can justify this decision to decimate the arts in this region because it leaves the entire area with no scheme of arts provision for young people, in or out of school.”
