Velvet Ensemble Theatre Company place the female voice centre stage at Wales Millennium Centre’.’ Velvet Ensemble Theatre Company presents UNPROTECTED, a new play by Bethan Marlow, in co-production with Wales Millennium Centre, this December.

Having participated in Wales Millennium Centre’s Incubator Project in 2009, with a creative collaboration process titled; Never Fear Love? Velvet Ensemble has been awarded co-production by Wales Millennium Centre to develop this work into a full production.

When asked about her new play, Bethan Marlow said ‘Unprotected follows Violet, who, having left home embarks on a life with no boundaries, she can now do anything and be anyone - it's like playing a game! But, as soon as she starts playing with that mysterious thing called love she discovers that the lines are blurred, the rules uncertain and a question rises- who's in control?’

In her first project with Velvet Ensemble, she says of working with the company ‘It's so exciting to have to write a female's journey. I thought I'd done if before in previous plays but actually, all I'd done was make the female's journey equal to the male! I'm very grateful to Velvet Ensemble for the opportunity to realise this! It's been fresh, new and full of learning curves the whole way through- and that, to me, is a perfect process.’

The play’s creative team is comprised of Award Winning Actress, Rhian Blythe, BBC Crash’s Gareth Milton and Director Sarah Bickerton whose relatively short career has seen her work with Sherman Cymru, Living Pictures, Thear Iolo and Mess Up the Mess.

Velvet Ensemble was founded in 2008 by Welsh Actress, Victoria John. The company’s objective is to place the female voice and experience centre stage. With the majority of drama both classical and modern seeing the audience follow a male protagonist through the narrative, Velvet Ensemble seek to redress this, long debated, gender imbalance. Victoria John said ‘For as long as I can remember, actresses have lamented the lack of roles for women. With a wealth of wonderful female talent in Wales, I feel that now is the time to address this gender imbalance. Theatre in Wales has never been more exciting and, even in these times of austerity and Arts Council cuts, the support we’ve received from Sherman Cymru and Wales Millennium Centre indicates to me that there has never been a better time for Velvet Ensemble and Wales to lead the way in producing thought provoking theatre with engaging roles for women.’

Velvet Ensemble has an active interest in young people, designing and delivering inspiring workshops for a number of schools and colleges across the UK, as well as some prominent organisations such as 4Talent, part of Channel 4 and Connexions.

Unprotected plays at Wales Millennium Centre’s Weston Studio on 8th and 9th December 2010 at 8pm. Tickets are available from www.wmc.org.uk or by contacting the Box Office on 029 2063 6464
