The screening will mark an historic occasion for Puccini’s follow-up to Madam Butterfly, as La Fanciulla Del West celebrates its centenary at the venue where it was first performed in the heart of New York. Italian opera well and truly embraced the new world with La Fanciulla del West. Based on the play The Girl of the Golden West by David Belasco, the opera is set during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Minnie is the beautiful owner of the Polka Saloon and all the local men are in love with her, including Jack Rance, the cynical sheriff of the miner's camp. When Minnie falls in love with a Mexican bandit named Ramirrez, she finds herself forced to play for his life - and her heart - in a poker game with Rance. All-American diva soprano Deborah Voigt radiates exuberance as the 'girl of the golden west' as she sings the title role, starring opposite Marcello Giordani. The conductor is Nicola Luisotti. The production is filmed and screened in high definition, and transmitted live from New York via satellite to the cinema screen at Theatr Mwldan. The Met Opera Live season offers audiences a remarkable new experience – the equivalent of a front row seat at the world’s most famous opera house, complete with its stunning costumes, magnificent sets and some of the best performers in the world – but for a fraction of the price of visiting New York, or any other major opera house. The live broadcast event adds an extra level of excitement, and audiences get to experience the performance as though they are on stage with the cast – something impossible during a normal live performance!
