ARTS COUNCIL OF WALES APPOINTS DEPUTY CHAIR

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) has announced the appointment of Dewi Walters as their new Deputy Chair. Mr Walters, who has been an ACW Council Member since June 2001, takes up the role of Deputy Chair with immediate effect.

ACW is an Assembly Sponsored Public Body (ASPB). It was established in 1994 by Royal Charter to develop and improve the knowledge, understanding, practice and accessibility of the arts to people in Wales.

The National Assembly for Wales is responsible for appointing Council Members, which consist of up to 18 unpaid members, including the Chair and Deputy Chair of ACW’s Council, Sybil Crouch. ACW’s Council manages the work of ACW, agrees national arts policy and allocates funding for over 1,000 artists and arts organisations in Wales every year.

Raised in the Gwendraeth Valley, Mr Walters was a headteacher in Powys for 14 years, first in Llanfyllin High School and later in Newtown High School. He is now an education consultant in Newtown, Powys. He has a particular interest in making the arts accessible to disabled people. He has served as chairman of the North Powys Branch of the National Deaf Children Society, Llanidloes Rugby Club Junior Committee, and the Justin Bond Charity for Sport.

Sybil Crouch, chair of ACW says: “We are very pleased to be able to announce this key appointment to ACW’s Council. Since joining as a council member last June, Dewi has made a very significant contribution to ACW’s work, especially in representing the arts in the Mid Wales region.”

Dewi Walters says: "This is a challenging and exciting time for the Arts Council of Wales as it begins to implement its new structure and strategy. There is emerging a real opportunity through working in partnership with interested organisations, to enhance the development of the Arts in Wales, and I am pleased to be a part of this process".
