Newport¹s first pub theatre continues its succesful launch season on Thursday, February 28 at the Pen & Wig, Stow Hill (8.30pm) with a full-length performance of Ian Rowland¹s award-winning drama The Sin Eaters. Ian was the founder member of Theatr Y Byd, the Cardiff-based company who have taken over the pub's upstairs function room. The Sin Eaters was first performed in Dempsey¹s pub, Cardiff, and later toured Irish pub venues winning the prestigious Writers Guild of Britain¹s Regional Play Award. "It's a zany, anarchic comedy following the adventures of two lads, Rhys and Hwyl," says director Chris Morgan. "The Sin Eaters mixes the philosophical with the colloquial and somewhere along the line resurrects the ancient Welsh tradition of 'sin eating.' Apparently, people used to try and seek atonement for their sins by getting other people to 'eat' them. To find out more, get along to the Pen & Wig." For Theatr Y Byd, the restaging of the play in a Newport pub echoes its point of origin: the company cut its teeth in a Cardiff pub - Dempseys - with a season of short plays by Ian Rowlands. A departure for Newport is the introduction of live music by Welsh composer James Williams. In addition to the pub theatre evenings, workshops are also being held by Theatr Y Byd¹s actors and directors aimed at encouraging local writers to participate in the project. The workshops will be held at The Millennium Centre, Pill. Writers - novice and established - will have an opportunity to hear their work read by professional actors. Extracts from these workshops will be given a professional presentation at two performance evenings taking place at the centre on March 7 & March 21 (8.30pm). please note: * The writing workshops are being held at The Millennium Centre, Pill,on March 8, 15 and 22. (2.30pm - 4.30pm; 6pm - 8pm). *Newport based writers wishing to get involved should contact Theatr Y Byd on 029 2049 9122 |
