Three courses on writing for theatre and radio for everyone; from the inexperienced to those who have had plays performed or broadcast 1) Beyond the First Draft: Writing for Theatre and Radio From 29 April to 4 May With Kaite O’Reilly and Bill Hopkinson Writing is all about rewriting. The week focuses on redrafting work-in-progress, clarifying intention, form and dramatic structure. Does the dialogue work? Are the characters ‘live’? Working as a group, using workshop techniques, your script will be explored and the possibilities uncovered. There will also be craft workshops, readings and individual feedback as well as the group process. Kaite O’Reilly writes for theatre, radio and film. Her play Yard was the winner of the Peggy Ramsay Award. She wrote and directed a screengem for Sgrin/Channel 4 last year and she has been commissioned in 2002-2003 by Sgript Cymru, Contact Theatre Manchester, Theatre Asou in Austria and Graeae Theatre/Birmingham Rep. Her first novel is nearing completion. Bill Hopkinson is an award-winning director and for many years dramaturg with NW Playwrights. Bill is now Literary Manager for Wales’ national new writing company Sgript Cymru. This course aims to extend a writer’s potential beyond the basics, concentrating on the development of drama scripts for stage and radio. Participants should have had at least one script broadcast, published or performed (at any level) and should bring with them a work-in-progress for development during the week. There may be an opportunity for your work to be read by professional actors at the end of the week. This course has been very successful and places will be limited. It is recommended that bookings and applications for bursaries are made as soon as possible. Alison Hindell is Senior Radio Drama Producer for BBC Wales and is a freelance theatre director who has staged productions in Britain and Ukraine. Her radio productions have won many awards, including a Sony Gold, a Writers’ Guild Award and a Gold Medal at the New York Radio Festival. David Britton is a writer and director who was until recently Head of Radio Drama for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. His own radio plays have been broadcast in Australia, Britain, New Zealand and Canada, and his stage works have been produced throughout Australia and in Singapore. They include The Newspaper of Claremont Street and Cargo, which won the Swan Gold award as Play of the Year. Cost: £320 (£345 single room) Bursaries available: Apply to Ty Newydd for details 3) Sam Boardman-Jacobs and Julia Pascal Drama: Beyond the Basics From 16 to 21 September The course will help you expand an idea, observed incident or autobiographical fragment into a script for either media drama or the stage – from simple monologues to full length scripts. There will be guidance as to which medium is the most appropriate for your concept, techniques to help you create character profiles, and help to structure the appropriate narrative journey for your chosen medium and theme. Sam Boardman-Jacobs has been a writer for theatre, television and radio for over 20 years. He has written countless radio and TV plays as well as many episodes for series and serials. He was resident scriptwriter for three years on Channel 4’s Brookside and spent 14 years on BBC Radio 4’s The Archers, for which he wrote over 500 episodes.
