The New York-based SITI Company will bring its world-renowned summer school to Dublin for the first time in August 2002. This is a unique opportunity for European practitioners from all disciplines to come together to work with one of the most exciting and experimental theatre companies currently working in America. Four SITI Company members will undertake a two-week intensive course which will cover Suzuki, Viewpoints and Composition. This will culminate in a masterclass given by Anne Bogart, SITI’s Artistic Director. About the SITI Company The SITI Company founded in 1992 began as an agreement between Tadashi Suzuki and Anne Bogart to establish a new venture in the United States that would emphasize international cultural exchange and collaboration. SITI believes in a commitment to the power of the theatre as a source of spiritual strength in the contemporary global environment. An ensemble-based theatre company, SITI's work is an example of the disciplines it practices and the artistic values it develops. The company's mission is: 1) To create new works for the theatre. 2) To perform and tour these productions nationally and internationally. 3) To provide ongoing training for young theatre professionals in an approach to acting that forges unique and highly disciplined artists for the theatre. 4) To foster opportunities for cultural exchange with theatre professionals and audiences from all over the world. www.siti.org About the training 1. Suzuki The Suzuki Method, created by the world-renowned theatre artist Tadashi Suzuki and the Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT), is designed to regain the perceptive, expressive abilities and power of the human body in a theatrical context. The training involves rigorous physical discipline to bring a heightened awareness and full emotional and physical commitment to each moment on stage. 2. Viewpoints The Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation which grew out of the post-modern dance world. It was first articulated by choreographer Mary Overlie, who broke down the two dominant issues performers deal with -- time and space -- into six categories. She called her approach the Viewpoints. Since that time, Anne Bogart and the SITI Company have expanded her notions and adapted them for actors. The Viewpoints allows a group of actors to function together spontaneously and intuitively and to generate bold theatrical work quickly. 3. Composition The Composition workshop incorporates major theories from great art forms such as music, painting, and architecture and applies them to the creation of work for the stage. Composition teaches a dynamic method for both generating bold original works and deeply exploring work on existing material. Each participant is expected to generate compositions for the stage. SITI in Dublin Places on this course are strictly limited. Participants must commit to the full two-week training period. Training is open to interested participants from all disciplines. The training is rigorously physical and a good level of fitness is recommended. The SITI training course will run from Monday 19 August – Sunday 1 September 2002 in Dublin Castle.
