Fluellen Theatre Company presents THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA by Federico Garcia Lorca (in a new performing version by Francis Hardy) Federico Garcia Lorca is one of the most important writers that Spain has produced. Famed in his own country mainly as a poet, his reputation elsewhere is based largely on three superb plays. THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA followed BLOOD WEDDING and YERMA and it is a play that Lorca never saw performed. He was a constant thorn in the side of Franco and the fascists during the build-up to the Spanish Civil War and in 1936, days after completing the play, he was arrested and summarily executed in an open field near his home in Grenada. THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA is widely regarded as his masterpiece. It tells the story of the stern and tyrannical Bernarda Alba who returns home from her husband`s funeral and vows to shut out all future visitors and keep her five daughters in mourning for eight years. But from the daughters` growing feelings of rebellion, frustration and desire comes a passionate defiance that leads to violent confrontation. The parallels between Bernarda and Franco are clear but never overstated in a play that is full of humanity and poetic vision and written with a masterful blend of humour, drama and pathos. It is one of the great plays of the twentieth century. Peter Richards directs an outstanding cast headed by Penny Andrews as Bernarda Alba. Also featured are Melisa Annis, Tracy Harries, Pat Hockridge, Naomi Martell, Alexandra Trowbridge Matthews, Claire Novelli, Julie Thursham and Mari-Ffion Williams THE GRAND THEATRE ARTS WING, Singleton Street, Swansea.
