Paul Rees comments on Franco's bastard in a letter to the Western Mail....

Dear Editor

I have been following the Franco's Bastard debate from a distance and as an ex-pat Welshman and writer now living and working in South Australia I would like to support Dic Edwards and his inalienable right to write. I have read his play, thanks to the Internet, but not seen the production. The play is well written and, as it tackles universal subjects, could be staged anywhere in the world.

The play skilfully traverses and raises the issue of identity and cultural confusion - and it seems that this is what some people want to hang Dic Edwards for.

Wales is not the only country in the world where the cultural mix of the population is changing rapidly, and it is not the only country where change in all its guises is causing angst for the resident community.

Whatever the outcomes of the changing world, plays such as Franco's Bastard need to be aired, debated, challenged and embraced, as they assist us to understand our place on this revolving ball.
