The Welsh language Youth Theatre group 'Y Gweithdy' are busy devising a brand new show called Dwli. The show will be peformed in Venue 2 at the Sherman Theatre on the 5th July at 8pm and in Contact Theatre, Manchester as part of the Contacting the World project at the Commonwealth Games Cultureshock Festival this July. The vision of the Contacting the World project is to celebrate youth culture and involves collaboration between twelve theatre groups for young people from all over the Commonwealth. The Sherman Youth Theatre have been collaborating (via mail, email, the web) with a group of young people from Sri Lanka to create a brand new piece of theatre. Dwli is the result of this collaboration. 'Y Gweithdy' members have chosen to represent their heritage through the use of traditional tales. Gelert and Branwen are just some of the tales that will be retold in a contemporary context. Dwli will be performed in Welsh in an accessible way, which non-Welsh speakers will be able to understand. The acclaimed Welsh writer, Roger Williams, nominated for a BAFTA for his work on Tales From Pleasure Beach (BBC 2), is leading 'Y Gweithdy' through this process. No stranger to the Sherman, Roger wrote Pop for the Sherman Youth Theatre in October 2001 and presented Saturday Night Forever with the Sherman Theatre Company. Dwli will be performed in Venue 2 at the Sherman Theatre on the 5th July at 8pm. Tickets are priced £4 with reductions at £3. Tickets are available from the Sherman Theatre Box Office on 029 2064 6900. |
