The Welsh College of Music and Drama has been granted a royal title. From now on, it will be known as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The College is the National Conservatoire of Wales. Her Majesty The Queen announced the grant of the honour, changing the title of the College on her Golden Jubilee visit to Wales on 13 June 2002. This accolade for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is shared by only five other conservatoires in the UK, like the Royal Academy of Music. The College, based in Cardiff Castle Grounds, offers degree courses in music, acting, stage design and stage management and past students include Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dougray Scott, Rob Brydon, Rosemary Joshua and Iris Williams. The Prince of Wales as Patron of the College, is delighted that the College has received this splendid recognition which is so richly deserved and so appropriate in this Jubilee Year. Edmond Fivet, Principal of the College said 'This is a wonderful endorsement of the tremendous work done by staff and students over the past 52 years. At a time when Wales is celebrating its culture and diversity, it is a fitting recognition of the important role the College has to play as the only academic institution in Wales providing vocational, professional training at conservatoire level'. Sir David Rowe-Beddoe, Chairman of the Board of Governors said 'We are honoured to become a Royal College. The establishment of the National Assembly of Wales signals a growing interest in, and concern for the development of national institutions, able to represent Wales on the European and World Stage. This expression of confidence in the College will also help us achieve our ambitious capital development plan published recently, and our goal to become a conservatoire of international recognition.' The Secretary of State for Wales, Paul Murphy, said 'The announcement by Her Majesty The Queen conferring the Royal title on the Welsh College of Music and Drama is a fitting tribute to the great contribution it has made to our cultural life.' |
