The funds are to create murals for public places or charitable institutions. The artists' requests for funds must be authorised by the institution in question. There are no restrictions on age or nationality and decisions are made throughout the year. Contact Abbey Awards for details on how to apply. The Abbey Awards offer an annual scholarship and three fellowships in painting at the British School in Rome. The nine month Abbey Scholarship (October 2003 - June 2004) is usually given to an exceptionally promising emergent painter while the three month Abbey Fellowships (three months during the same period as the scholarship) are awarded to mid-career painters with an established record of achievement. The grants available are: - Sabbatical grant - for artists who have taught in higher education for at least three and a half years. - Mature student grant - to pay for fees for a BA or MA course - Project grant - Travel grant Applicants must have at least a BA (except for those applying for the Mature student grant) and have at least three years' continual residence in Britain up to the date of the application. The awards will fund UK residencies for Portuguese artists to come and work with UK counterparts. There are four awards available for up to 10,000 each for projects taking place between 01/04/02 and 31/03/04. Residencies will last for up to eight weeks and the elements of professional development and public performance are central to the awards. Artists of any experience who work in Wales or who are of Welsh origin are eligible to submit. The video art exhibitions are one aspect of a larger art project concerned with the connections between film and reminiscence. Therefore any community films or home-movies are also desired for use in conjunction with the art screenings.
