The money will provide children and young people with opportunities to experience theatre at school, on theatre visits or by taking part in theatre productions themselves. Jenny Randerson said: "My Culture Strategy Creative Future highlights the importance of engaging young people in the arts. The money I have announced today will help young people interested in theatre and the performing arts build on their skills and interest in this area. This funding will also assist with the target of providing every child in Wales with a theatre in education experience at each of the four key stages of the curriculum. This new money is in addition to a number of initiatives that are already underway in offering arts opportunities for children and young people. For example, there are pilot youth arts projects across Wales which aim to co-ordinate youth arts activity across a local authority area, making it easier for young people to know what is available and making access to them easier. The pilots cover all art forms from work at galleries to youth theatre. Young people have an option of attending or actually participating. This co-ordinated approach helps encourage greater participation by young people in the arts. "The Assembly Government has also provided support of almost £100,000 to the Shakespeare in Schools Festival which has provided children with the opportunity to become more familiar with the works of Shakespeare. "The details of today’s announcement are being worked on by the Arts Council and more detail will follow In the New Year". |
