Arts Council of Wales response to the Assembly report on cultural policy in Wales |

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) greatly welcomes the publishing of this report. ACW has consistently expressed its enthusiasm for what is the first ever wide-ranging review into arts and cultural policy in Wales, and now looks forward to working with the National Assembly in implementing the recommendations made. In The role of the arts in creating the new Wales - A call to action to the National Assembly for Wales (March 1999), ACW stated that for Wales to benefit from the social, economic, and educational opportunities the arts offer, the National Assembly should consider the need to: have a committee with specific responsibility for cultural strategies and identify culture as a prominent portfolio of one of the Assembly Secretaries; recognise that the arts and cultural industries can help the National Assembly achieve its ambitions for Wales and integrate them into all its policy-making including economic development, community regeneration and education, and seek advice from the wide range of agencies and bodies which deliver cultural activity in Wales - national and local, professional and voluntary, subsidised and commercial - and develop an integrated approach to cultural policy. The publishing of the Arts & Culture review, the forthcoming formation of a new Assembly Culture Committee, and the recent appointment of Jenny Randerson AM as the Culture & Sport Minister signal the growing importance of the arts in Wales and its higher ranking on the Assembly's political agenda. The review report will provide the context for the work ACW is currently undertaking to implement the recommendations of the Wallace report. ACW looks forward to working with the Culture & Sport Minister, the National Assembly, the arts sector and other key partners including local government to develop a sustainable way forward for the arts in Wales. |
