The various difficulties which ACW has experienced in recent times have been widely publicised. Council and Chief Executive met last week to consider ACW's response to the Wallace report and the report into the Theatre for Young People part of ACW's drama strategy, commissioned by the Chief Executive from the auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers. Council has decided with regret to accept Ms Weston's resignation in the face of these criticisms since it is important to regain the confidence of the arts community and other partners. This will allow ACW to make a new start. Council noted the Chief Executive's considerable achievements with the Arts Council of Wales over the past six years both as Lottery Director and as Chief Executive. The Wallace report notes that ACW's record on accountability and propriety is exemplary and that Ms Weston's personal contribution to this has been central. Ms Weston said: "Naturally I am saddened by the various criticisms. I think it is right that I accept full responsibility as Chief Executive and have offered my resignation which Council has accepted. I hope very much that with this new beginning ACW will now be able to continue its progress towards a good and equitable spread of development and support of the arts at all levels for the benefit of all the people of Wales. The restructuring which Council is considering will be a great opportunity to achieve this. I would like to record my gratitude for the friendship and support of ACW staff who have worked so hard, often in difficult circumstances. I am optimistic that future challenges can be met and all members of staff have my sincere best wishes for the future." |
