The arts call on the National Assembly to control the costs of bureaucracy. |
The arts community calls on the National Assembly to control the costs of arts bureaucracy. Representatives of arts organisations in Wales have today called on the National Assembly to investigate the costs of arts bureaucracy following the disclosure that the general administration costs of the Arts Council of Wales has increased by a massive 133,000 in the last year. Lottery administration has increased by an even larger 166,000. Total administration costs, including lottery, now stand at 3.296m. CHRIS RYDE, Chair of the Wales Association for the Performing Arts, said: "We want an assurance that the cost of bureaucracy will be reduced following the Assembly Review. It is disgraceful that an organisation which tells its clients to make do with inflationary increases should increase its own establishment costs by nearly 10%. It is even more disgraceful that the salary of the Chief Executive should increase by 15% (47.5k-54.6k). How could the Council sanction such a massive increase at such a time? It is absolutely critical that the limited resources in the arts should be spent on the arts themselves and not pushing paper around." JANEK ALEXANDER, Chair of the Presenting the Arts Group added: We urged the Assembly back in February to ensure that funds for the arts are spent on grants not ACW administration. The Assembly can't conjure money out of nowhere to pay for Arts Council administration; the money comes out of grants that are meant to be spent on creating art. The Wallace report gives an opportunity to devise a more effective structure - the new Council must ensure that administration costs reduce. |
