'ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO INCREASE ARTS FUNDING' ARGUES PLAID
|
Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales' cultural affairs spokesperson, Elin Jones AM, has called on the Assembly to invest more into the arts in Wales. More than £100m extra funding is being directed towards the arts in England and Ms Jones is arguing that the Assembly needs to ensure that more money is available to fund arts activity in all its variety in Wales. She was speaking at the start of her week-long visit to the National Eisteddfod in Llanelli.
"The Assembly's post-16 Education Committee, which is responsible for the arts in Wales, has conducted a very constructive and illuminating review of how the arts are funded and managed in Wales", said Ms Jones. "It has become clear to us on the committee that the Assembly needs to create a stronger economic base for the arts and look at long term, strategic investment beyond that which is currently funded by the Lottery. The Committee has already agreed to prioritise the arts within its own budget. We are now calling on Tom Middlehurst AM, the Culture Secretary, to argue the case within the Cabinet and ensure that some of the additional money coming to Wales as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review is directed to the Committee to spend on the arts. The Labour Government in Wales needs to put right years of under-funding of cultural activities.
"The National Eisteddfod is evidence enough that cultural activity in Wales is thriving and creating wonderful opportunities for people to enjoy and participate in the arts. The important contribution of community, voluntary and amateur arts activities needs to be recognised and maintained. It is important that we build on the Eisteddfod's success and ensure that a sustainable, long term strategy is in place to develop arts activity in Wales."
