artistic policy | The club was formed in 1957 by Donald Jones and operated under the the name of BISTRE DRAMA GROUP. Donald is still an active member today. The first productions were religious and Christmas plays. From there the group went onto performing pantomimes which over the years became the main productions. As the group grew, plays started to be included and in 1967 the group took over a building known as EDEN HOUSE at LANE END in Buckley. During this time the group changed its name to BUCKLEY THEATRE CLUB. The club continued to prosper and started performing its plays and pantomimes in Hawkesbury Community Centre (now known as Hawkesbury Little Theatre since the new community centre was built in the same grounds) In 1984 the owners of the theatre, Clwyd County Council (now Flintshire County Council) allowed the club the sole use of the building for rehearsals and storage of scenery, and started to use Elfed Theatre to stage its productions. In May 2001 the club at last managed to obtain a long term lease on the theatre from its owners. We also became a registered charity (1085209). Plans to improve the building started to be made with some earnest. The first phase, and most important of what will be several phases, was to provide ladies, gents and disabled toilets and kitchen. Central heating was also installed throughout the theatre. Planning permission was granted by the Council and necessary funds were raised from various Council sources, local firms and organisations and club members themselves. With all the nitty gritty sorted out regarding planning permission and building regulations etc. the footings started to be dug out on 15th October 2001 and building our new extension continued as soon as the concrete floor pan was ready. The extension was completed and handed over to us at the end of January 2002. As soon as the builders had gone we completely redecorated the auditorium. Before and After pictures can be seen on our pictures page from our LINKS page The Committee are now actively looking at, and discussing the next phase of work to be done in the near future. These include (but not in any order) the following:- 1. Re-sheeting the outside walls and roof including improving insulation 2. Tiering the auditorium seating 3. Replacing the seating 4. Raising the roof on the stage to provide more height in the wings and better positioning of the stage lighting 5. Building a scenery dock, workshop and dressing rooms behind the stage Exiting times to come! Please visit our site regularly to find out where we are up to. Better still, come and join us. |
