A Priovincial Life - National Theatre Wales
One of Wales' greatest writers and directors, Peter Gill, returns to his native city with a portrait of provincial life in 1890s Russia. Based on Chekhov's poignant short story, A Provincial Life follows one young man's struggle to exchange his privileged position for the life of a worker. This painful, lyrical play dramatises the search for equality in a way that resonates deeply today. This lavish production will bring a Welsh flavour to Chekhov’s Russia, and will be designed by award-winning production designer Alison Chitty, a long-term collaborator with Mike Leigh and Peter Hall. A Provincial Life will be one of the first productions staged at the newly rebuilt Sherman Cymru building in Cardiff.
The cast of professionals will include Kezia Burrows, Alex Clatworthy, Richard Corgan, Helen Griffin, Lee Haven-Jones, Mike Hayward, Mark Lewis, Sara Lloyd-Gregory, John-Paul Macleod, Liam Mansfield, Clive Merrison, Kenneth Price, Nicholas Shaw, William Thomas and Menna Trussler.
Alongside these will be an ensemble of 12 semi-professional performers from Cardiff, gathered as part of National Theatre Wales’ TEAM programme, with help from Sherman Cymru and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Jac a’r Goeden Ffa (Jack and the Beanstalk) - Martyn Geraint
Cwmni Martyn Geraint, in a co-production with Rhondda Cynon Taf Theatres, have just hit the road with their brand new pantomime, Jac a’r Goeden Ffa (Jack and the Beanstalk). Following the success of ‘Lamp Hudol’ (Aladdin) last year, this magical show is sure to entertain people from 3 to 103.During the performance, the audience will help Jack to overcome countless challenges and to get out of impossible situations in the Land of the Giant, so he can marry the new Squire’s daughter. Martyn Geraint is one of Wales’ best-loved children’s’ entertainers and the show will be full of fun, with plenty of brand new music to enjoy.
The cast includes Carys John as Jac, Martyn Geraint as Jim, Jack’s brother, Lisa Marged as Anna, the Squire’s daughter, Meilyr Siôn as the Squire and Dion Davies as Dame Winifred Plop, Jack and Jim’s mother. The show is written by Martyn Geraint and directed by Angharad Lee.
The reaction to last year’s tour from the audience was excellent. Sian Elin, from Harlech, said,
“A fantastic show as usual for both children and adults! Everyone’s enjoyed themselves – Christmas has arrived!”
Martyn Geraint is looking forward to the tour and hoping for good weather,
“The response to the panto last year was fabulous and I hope we get the same support this year. We were very lucky to be able to perform in spite of all the snow – though we lost some of our audience on our opening night in Pontypridd and also on a couple of days in Caernarfon and Pwllheli! Then I had a car accident on black ice before the performance in Newport! But, “the show must go on”, and thanks to the cast, the crew and the lively audience, it was a good show, too! This year we’re trying to go back to the roots of the tale of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk and to create some ‘twists’ in the plot to bring something fresh to an old, old story.”
The pantomime is performed in Welsh and is suitable for Welsh learners.

Following the sell–out, critically acclaimed staging of Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money in 2011, Waking Exploits return with Simon Stephens’ beautiful yet chilling award winning play Pornography.Directed by Mathilde López, Waking Exploits take to the road touring the length and breadth of Wales in April 2012.
One unforgettable week in July 2005.
Live 8, the G8 Conference, the 2012 Olympic announcement, and the 7/7 bombings.
Britain feels like the centre of the world. Major events are taking place all over the country and everyone is talking. There’s a buzz in the air as the sense of anticipation grows. The world’s eyes are focused on us, the energy is electric. The City, Britain, and its people are alive.
In less than one hour in Central London, everything will change…
Pornography is the hard hitting play by Simon Stephens that captures Britain as it crashes from the euphoria and promise of Olympic dreams into the devastation of 7/7.
“A Play of true grace and terror” – Guardian
Pornography, written in response to the 7/7 London attacks, explores the intimate and entwining stories of British lives, including the lonely journey of a man heading towards oblivion on the London Underground.
Seven years on, Pornography becomes all the more relevant in the year that the London 2012 Olympics finally arrive in the UK.
“I was haunted by what the bombers were going through on that final day. It struck me that at the heart of their action was an alienation from the people they were going to kill and from themselves. This seemed to be symptomatic of a consumerist culture, which objectifies everyone and everything.
And objectification also sits under the production and consumption of pornography. I think we’re living in pornographic times.” – Simon Stephens
Simon Stephens has, in recent years, become one of the most celebrated writers in British theatre and this is set to be the first major professional staging of his work in Wales.
