other notes | The Concept Players are a small amateur theatre group based in the South East Wales area. The group was set up in order to try to put on productions that were just that little bit different from everyone else. By the time you have read this, you'll have a fair idea of who the Concept Players are, and what sort of things they try to do. What I will try to do is to describe the set of circumstances which prompted the Concept Players to apply for Lottery money. The Concept Players are a very young group, not just in terms of average age, but in terms of their approach to most things. Founded in late 1994, the group had no history, and was therefore able to bring a fresh approach to the business of running an amateur musical theatre company. At first, the group had no formal committee structure, and was governed by something of a benign dictatorship, which worked well until it needed to take a more practical approach to money. Having said that, the finances were run using a fully blown accounts system, running on a PC, from day one, and the group managed to get itself into the black very quickly by putting on productions which it could take from place to place. In fact, the theory was that if the requirements were cut down to a minimum, the shows could be put on anywhere there was a space, relying solely on the group's talents as actors and singers to carry the production off. It was a reaction to the sort of background which most of the members had experienced in other societies: expensive musicians who weren't really part of the show, inadequate sets, costumes that didn't fit, autocratic producers/directors. |
