Grand Theatre Swansea
January 17, 2005
A showcase for the talent to be found in and around Swansea,
this concert was staged to raise funds for the Motor Neurone
Disease Association and featured performances from the Sir
Harry Secombe Youth Musical Theatre Company, Ffynone House
Trust and the Grand Theatre School of Dance, among many others.

Eleanor McLeod introduced the acts, beginning with a nicely
judged summary of the ways in which our perceptions of charity
and generosity have changed in the aftermath of the tsunami
disaster, yet pointing out that there are other causes which
deserve our attention.

On the plus side, it was good to see to so many gifted youngsters
sharing their undoubted talents with such a large and appreciative
crowd, performing musical extracts from a large variety of shows
in aid of such a tremendously worthy cause.

It has to be said, however, that the manic determination of so
many parents to immortalise their children's efforts on film by
means of flash photography - not just at this venue but at several
others throughout the region - is fast becoming a major source of
irritation. To be candid, this is a situation which cannot be allowed
to continue.

High time that it was made crystal clear that flash photography
has absolutely no place whatsoever in the context of a live
theatrical performance, not only for reasons of child protection
but also because it is intrusive and distracting
