- Gloria Days [ 2007]
author: marc rees
synopsis:
The flamboyant excesses associated with the relatively short life of Henry Cyril Paget, 5th Marquis of Anglesey, are the stuff of legend (or at least deserve to be). He squandered his inheritance on a lavish social life and accumulated massive debts. Regarded as the "black sheep" of the family, he was famed for his ‘Butterfly Dance’, inspired by the Follies Berger pioneer Loie Fuller that earned him the sobriquet ‘the Dancing marquis’. His prodigious spending on jewellery and theatrical costumes eventually bankrupted the family dynasty, but his life story is set to be re-examined through a new innovative dance production. Gloria Days is a multidisciplinary solo work performed by the award-winning Welsh artist Marc Rees and produced by Cardiff-based mes:a International Performance Collective. The production premiers at Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea 18-19 October as part of the Swansea Festival and then transfers to Diversions Dance House, Cardiff presented by Wales Millennium Centre, 24-27 October. Gloria Days is supported by a world-class creative team, including opera designer, John Macfarlane, who has designed a unique headdress for the production (made at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). The performance seeks through dance to reconstruct this remarkable flamboyant character and reveal the complex and rather tragic figure that lay beneath all the glitz, glamour and frivolity. At the height of his extravagance it is reported he squandered £500,000 on jewels and outfits alone, the equivalent amount today would be 35 million pounds! One example of his superabundance saw him convert the family chapel into a theatre modelled on Sarah Bernhardt's and mounted a series of spectacular productions with a professional company for his friends, guests and the local community (this during the Welsh religious revival!). He eventually died penniless in 1905, aged 29, leaving his family to pick up the pieces and his enormous debts. A short film, ‘The Dancing Marquis Diaries’ which forms an integral part of the project has also been shortlisted for the prestigious Iris Prize, the International Gay and Lesbian Short Film Prize, valued at £25,000. The winner of the inaugural prize, who will be invited to make their next short film in the UK, will be announced during a three day festival held in Cardiff from October 4th.

- The House Project [ 2004]
author: Michael Toppings
synopsis:
Performed by Alex Alderton, Martin Belanger, Matt Cook, Tammy Forsythe, David Greenslade, Richard Lynch, Sharon Morgan, Marc Rees, Caroline Sabin, André Stitt. Video artist: Nikki Forest The House Project follows R.I.P.E.’s last Welsh-Canadian collaboration performance, RevolUn created by acclaimed Welsh interdisciplinary artist Marc Rees with choregrapher Benoit Lachambre in 2002. The House Project is a site-specific performance installation in which the text of a novel, “7 Rooms, a Prologue, a bridge and an afterward” by Michael Toppings is transcribed onto the walls, floors and décor of a domestic house. Each room is a different chapter of the novel. Each chapter is also re-interpreted live by a host of Wales’ most charismatic, innovative, diverse performers from film and television to radical performance art, sonic art and lap dancing. Also featuring guest artists from Canada Tammy Forsythe, Martin Belanger and Nikki Forest. Each night the audience is invited to enter the house and wander through this “labyrinthine walk-in novel”. First presented in Regina, Saskaetechewan in 2000 by Michael Toppings, Chapter in association with R.I.P.E./ Marc Rees is delighted to bring the first international re-location of this extraordinary performance to Cardiff. “The House Project resides in and expands on previous metaphors or domestic space. Unlike Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space, there are few references to domestic arthcitecture as an intimate and safe haven: this house is haunted. The House Project takes as its boarders late 20th century pain, desire and Queer polemics to unpack memory and shake the foundations. These are stories for the whole family – for the whole neighbourhood – to read and remember.” Joanne Bristol, Crossovers (Canada).
- RevolUn [ 2002]
author: Marc Rees and Benoît Lachambre
synopsis:
The room in the family home where he grew and his awakening physicality inform the basis of the piece. He tells us that his growing awareness of his own homosexuality has also informed the work. As is his preoccupation with the naked wrestling scene between Alan Bates and Oliver Reed in Ken Russell’s film ‘Women In Love’.
- Willows III - Waiting for take off... [ 2000]
author: Marc Rees
synopsis:
Willows III - Waiting for take off... is based on the relatively little known but remarkable event that took place in the heart of Cardiff in 1910. ...in the early misty morning of June 10th 1910, the young aeronaut Captain Ernest Willows and his airship crossed Cardiff from Eastmoors in the Docks to land on the lawns of the city hall... This pioneering moment was captured through a few blurred photographs but also miraculously on film - but for 21 seconds only.
