synopsis: Nonno and Lol have lived together for a long, long time. They love finding and telling stories – they find stories in their heads, they find stories under the carpet, they find stories in the washbasket, in fact, they find stories in everything around them. But one day, Nonno can’t find a story anywhere …… Inspired by stories told to Theatr Iolo by nursery children in South Wales, ‘Under the Carpet’ is an enchanting performance with music which transports the audience to a world of friendship and arguments, washing and stories. |

Holding the attention of nursery-age kids isn’t easy, but this recent production at the Unicorn proves it can be done. Inspired by stories told to Welsh theatre company Theatr Iolo by nursery children, Under the Carpet is performed by two characters, Nonno and Lol. During the show, Nonno and Lol take their audience on a journey into their imaginations, creating stories inspired by all manner of things – the thoughts in their heads, things in the wash basket, what they find in the cupboard or on the ironing board; in fact, anything and everything around them becomes subject for their tales. They also use a violin, guitars, wooden spoons and other everyday objects to play music and sing songs while acting out the stories, creating a piece which is simple, gentle, amusing and fun, with some lovely theatrical touches. Stephen Hickman and Jak Poore perform brilliantly and never fail to captivate their young audience. I took my four-year-old daughter Lucy and she absolutely loved it. In fact, so spellbound was she that she sat still for the entire 40 minutes. As any parent will know, that alone is a real achievement. As the performance ended, Lucy’s expert verdict was: “Why have they gone? Where have they gone? Are they coming back? Can we see it again?” High praise indeed. |
