Olion Project: TAN Dance

TAN Dance’s mission is to make dance accessible to the communities of Neath Port Talbot & Swansea. Working with the broadest range of people in all kinds of places they use dance primarily as an art form but also as a tool for education, integration & social change.
They are working with the Met on a number of arts based projects as part of Olion.

Olion Project: Discover

The Discover Project offered an opportunity for young carers to explore their talents and develop skills in a range of art forms. During April, 25 young people from Crossroads Young Carer Centre, took part in 2 days of workshops at Forge Fach, Clydach.

By engaging in dance, music, art, film and photography, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, young carers could share their feelings about their unique lifestyles and responsibilities. Mixing with their peers in a new environment to share creative activities also encouraged new friendships and possibilities.

“I’m going to try everything, I don’t do dance but I’ll have a go”
(12 yr old participant)

“I thought about home a little but I liked not having to argue and worry”
(11 yr old participant)

“ I played drums, learned how to do relaxation techniques and made a new friend”
(14 yr old participant)

Olion Project: Love Songs

Love Songs was an Opera & Dance Project aiming to introduce opera to learning disabled young people.
TAN has found learning disabled people to have a deep emotional response to beauty in the arts but the opportunities for them to experience high art are limited. TAN’s diverse capacity dance company, TAKE THIS, played host to the project: 30+ learning disabled young people were recruited to form The Olion Movement Chorus including 14 pupils and 6 staff from Penybryn Special School, Swansea.
A week of intense rehearsals took place at SMU’s Townhill Campus led by internationally renowned choreographer Wolfgang Stange. Wolfgang is founder, director and principal choreographer of Amici Dance Theatre, an integrated dance company of able bodied and disabled performers whose work challenges conventional attitudes to disability and the arts.

The aim of the project was to create a brand new piece, Love Songs, in a highly creative and inclusive process that saw new friendships, confidence and skills being developed throughout the group of more than 40 young people, young adults, teachers and volunteers.

The participants travelled to Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff to perform Love Songs at the annual Unity Festival on Monday 25th June. The Love Songs cast performed with Welsh National Opera musicians (Soprano-Lynn Boudreau, Baritone-Owen Webb, Pianist-David Doidge) who had joined them in Townhill during rehearsals.

The young dancers were able to express their thoughts and feelings through the medium of dance, with immediate and ongoing benefits to their levels of confidence and communication skills. For the young people from Penybryn, dancing alongside Take This proved to them what they were capable of achieving and for many, awakened an interest in dance that might be taken into the future. TAN Dance runs a weekly dance class for learning disabled people, which is led by their diverse capacity dance company Take This.

“We are extremely happy with the improvement in his behaviour and this is definitely linked to his participation in the Olion Love Songs Dance Project” (Penybryn teacher)

“we never would have believed it possible ... to see our grandson dancing, expressing himself and being so much a part of the cast, has moved us to tears” (Grandparents of Penybryn pupil)

“A remarkable performance - It was beautiful and an inspiration to me, mesmerising” (Audience member)

Olion Project: Troy Boyz

Troy Boyz is an urban dance, music and percussion project, which will work with 50 young people to bring the ancient Trojan drama of love and war to life for Project Olion

The Troy Boyz Project, which takes place in Swansea, begins with a Taster Weekend (18th & 19th August), followed by a two week rehearsal period working with the project choreographers, directors and mentors (20th-25th and 28th-31st August) working towards a performance at Swansea Grand Theatre
(Tues 4th September).

The aim of the Troy Boyz project is to encourage commitment and reward, to nurture self-belief and enable personal development. After the project there is scope for participants to continue with their artistic development by linking with schemes such as TAN’s Dynion and Meibion Dance Companies and further TAN activities. Engagement in the project will demonstrate the value of commitment and provide skills that can be transferred to a wide range of employment and training opportunities in the future.

Troy Boyz is looking for boys and girls aged 16-19yrs, especially those not in work or education – whether you like dance, music or percussion, there’s something for everyone. Give us 2 weeks in August and we’ll give you an unforgettable experience ! It’s bang tidy !
