'Til Death do us Part
by JS Hartley

Theatre versus Oppression (TvO) is a UK charity which uses Applied Theatre methods to bring about positive change and development in communities. As part of our work we produce plays based on the issue based work we do in communities. Plays are developed from the stories of those we work with to take an in depth look at certain issues and the perspectives involved in it.

In our work with we aim to always work with all sides involved in an issue. This means in projects in South America where we worked with torture victims, we also worked with those who had tortured them, or in our current work on domestic abuse and conflict within relationships we are working with victims of domestic abuse and perpetrators. This includes work with Women's Safety Units and in prisons.

The play 'Til Death do us Part was first performed in Chapter Arts Centre Cardiff earlier this year. It has also been performed in various venues in the USA and a Spanish version is currently playing in 3 South American countries. The play is based on a series of workshops and interviews with victims and perpetrators of domestic violence and tells the story (based on a true story) of one particular couple. The play does not take sides but simply gives a voice to both parties involved leaving the audience to ask their own questions.

Audience comments on the play:
'gripping'
'shocked myself at my own reactions'
'a play that means something'
'it is so good to watch a play that has a purpose, that causes us to question'
'just thinking about it brings back shivers'
'it felt so real'
'uncomfortable viewing but couldn't turn away from it'
'it's not just about domestic abuse, it made me question my own family relationships. It really is about conflict and all relationships have an element of conflict.'
