TRADITIONAL & CONTEMPORARY DANCE PERFORMANCES FROM INDIA AND MALAYSIA Part of THE SUMMER SHIFT 2004 CPR International Programme of Workshops Thursday 24 June and Saturday 1 July As part of this year’s Summer Shift programme of international performance workshops CPR is presenting two dance performances at the Castle Theatre in Aberystwyth. This is a unique opportunity to see the work of two outstanding performers, creating work inspired by contemporary and traditional forms from India and Malaysia. On Thursday 24 June, 8pm, Rekha Tandon from India will perform, Odissi Mandala -Classical and Contemporary Prayers and Poems in Odissi Dance. Rekha will presents five short solos combining the traditional Indian dance form of Odissi with texts by writers such as Rabindrath Tagore and Maya Angelou. Rekha has been an Odissi dancer for many years and has performed widely around the world. She has trained primarily in Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra’s lineage of this tradition with Shrimati Madhavi Mudgal at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi. Rekha will also talk about the art of Odissi dance. On Saturday 3 July, 8pm Aida Redza from Malaysia will perform Urban Shamans on the Move - In Timeless Rituals & Myths, Extremism & Revelations. Urban Shamans on the Move is a breathtaking performance taken from the X’ PEDITION OPENCAGE project by Aida Redza (in collaboration with Ilya Magnes). This dance/theatre piece is in 3 parts: BORAQUE (Bird of Paradise) Berkumandangnya Qasidah; 3 NAGA (3 Dragon) – Feast of Fools and GAJAH PUTIH (White Elephant) – Stirrings. In this solo site-specific performance, Aida Redza combines Southeast Asian traditional dance and theatre forms to reinvent the physical art of storytelling. Using dance and movement inspired by exciting contemporary images and ideas Aida takes an alternative look at the identity of the Asian urban shaman of today.
