£2.7M ARTS COUNCIL OF WALES AWARD FOR THE TORCH THEATRE

The Torch Theatre Company has been producing drama for 27 years, and the theatre building itself operates as a venue for touring theatre, opera, dance, jazz, cinema and visual art.  The building, which was constructed in 1977 is now in poor condition with its facilities and equipment outdated.  The Theatre is now in need of a major refurbishment in order to continue to deliver and develop its wide range of activities and to enable the award-winning Torch Theatre Company to have access to proper rehearsal and stage facilities.

Peter Tyndall, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Wales comments “I am always amazed by the ability of the Torch to achieve the highest levels of artistic excellence on such a small amount of investment.  The theatre has a crucial role to play in the development of touring theatre throughout Wales, and will provide access for the people of Pembrokeshire to some of the best drama production in Wales.  I would like to pay a personal tribute to the Torch Artistic Director, Peter Doran for his vision and commitment to driving the project forward”.

Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport Alun Pugh said:  " This funding will ensure that the Torch Theatre continues to maintain its reputation as a venue for high quality arts productions as well as providing community facilities for the people of Pembrokeshire to enjoy.”

The project will involve the refurbishment and extension of the existing Torch Theatre building and adding a second versatile auditorium.  There will be new facilities for local community arts groups, a new restaurant, improved cinema, gallery and conference facilities.  A major part of the development will be improved and wider access for all to all parts of the building.

The Torch’s Artistic Director, Peter Doran, said “We very much welcome the news of the Lottery grant: not only is it a major step forward in our fundraising towards our development programme but it also underlines the Arts Council’s faith in the Torch as a major player in the development of the performing arts in Wales.  With £2.7 million behind us, we now have to work towards securing the rest of the money to make up the £5 million needed”.
