Arts Council restates the principle of arms length funding

The Arts Council of Wales today submitted its response to the Assembly Government’s enquiry into Public Sector Reform. The report “Future Arrangements for Supporting the Arts in Wales” outlines the benefits of an independent Arts Council with a close but distinct relationship with government.  Members welcomed the opportunity to contribute to the review and endorsed the conclusion of a report submitted to a meeting of the Council in Aberystwyth, today.

Iestyn Davies, Head of Communications at ACW said, “The report outlines the benefit of independence to the arts sector as well as government and highlights the experiences of countries where arts policy and funding come directly from government. It reaffirms the benefit of linking Grant in Aid with Lottery funding and considers ways of ensuring a clear synergy between Ministerial priorities and practical arts policy.”

The report can be found on the Arts Council of Wales’ website http://www.artswales.org/publications/publication.asp?id=173
