Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru : Master Classes     

Professional actors will be offered an opportunity to try out their Shakespearian acting skills when the forthcoming Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru - the National Welsh Touring Theatre Company’s production of one of William Shakespeare’s best know romantic tragedies, Romeo and Juliet, visits their area.

Under the watchful eye of the company’s Artistic Director, Cefin Roberts, the actors will be taken through their paces and be introduced to the classical acting style.

“Playing classical plays undoubtedly provides actors with an excellent grounding for their career,” said Cefin Roberts.    

“Clarity of speech is emphasised as is an understanding of some of the most refined poetry and prose ever written,” he added.


The master classes will be held at Bangor’s Theatr Gwynedd on October 9, 2004 at 3.00pam; in the Arad Goch Studio in Aberystwyth on October 16, 2004 at 10.30am; Swansea’s Dylan Thomas Centre on October 20, 2004 at 2.30pm; and Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre on November 6, 2004 at 2.00pm.

A master class audience are welcome to watch the participants being taken through their paces in each venue. Actors who are interested in taking part are asked to contact Judith Roberts on judith@theatr.com in order to complete the necessary arrangements.

Drama student workshops will also be available during the six-week-long tour.

“The workshops will offer students an opportunity to analyse Shakespeare is terms of language, meter and subject matter,” added Cefin Roberts.

“The students will hear about the physical and musical disciplines needed to play a Shakespearean part and investigate the various performing skills,” he added.

The workshops will be held in Theatr Felinfach, Ceredigion, on October 13, 2004, at 1.30pm; the Aberystwyth Arts Centre on October 15, 2004, at 10.00am; Denbigh Town Hall on October 20, 2004, at 12.30pm; the Stiwt Theatre, Rhosllennerchrugog on October 21, 2004 at 10.00am; Llanrwst Community Centre, October 22, 2004 at 10.00am; Swansea’s Dylan Thomas Art Centre on November 2, 2004, at 10.00am; Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre on November 3, 2004 at 10.00am; the Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd on November 5, 2004, at 10.00am; and in Cardigan’s Theatr Mwldan on November 11, 2004, at 10.00am.

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru tour of Wales with Romeo and Juliet commences on October 6-9, 2004,  in Bangor’s Theatr Gwynedd, before going on to the Aberystwyth Arts Centre (October 14-16), Theatr Stiwt, Rhosllanerchrugog (October 19-20), Swansea’s Taliesin Arts Centre (October 28-29), Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre (November 3-5) and ending in Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan (November 9-11).

 

A reduced presentation of Romeo and Juliet has specially tailored for the needs of Welsh learners. These will be performed at 6.30pm before the main evening performance in Bangor’s Theatr Gwynedd on October 8, 2004; in The Aberystwyth Arts Centre on October 15, 2004; in the Stiwt Theatre, Rhosllannerchrugog on October 20, 2004; Swansea’s Taliesin Arts Centre on October 29, 2004; Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre on November 4, 2004; and Cardigan’s Theatr Mwldan on November 10, 2004.

 

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s production of Romeo and Juliet is the first to be performed in Welsh by a professional theatre company.
