Situated on the Townhill Campus of Swansea Institute, with magnificent views over the city and the bay through the Scots pines, Townhill Theatre has until now been used mostly for small student productions, rehearsals and exams, with the odd African drumming workshop thrown in here and there. All important stuff, of course, but we think it is a shame that its full potential as a theatre has not yet been realised. So, Volcano Theatre Company, which is based at the Institute, has got together with students and staff from the Theatre Studies department in an initiative that will transform Townhill Theatre into a brand new venue. Refurbished and equipped with a new box office and control room, the theatre will present an exciting and diverse programme of professional performance alongside regular productions and showcases by the students from the Institute. In this win-win situation, the city of Swansea gets another much-needed serious arts venue and the students gain the benefit of working with a range of arts professionals. And there will still be plenty of room for the African drumming. We do need your help, though. Townhill Theatre is still a rather well-kept secret and we’d like to launch its new programme with a bit of a splash that will put it straight on the map. Making sensible use of the internationally-renowned company on its doorstep, the theatre opens its new programme next week with Volcano’s new and much talked-about show, The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In this revitalised version of Shakespeare’s timeworn classic, we have transferred the action to a house in which four strangers are confined and are embarking on a bizarre Romeo & Juliet-inspired suicide pact. Strictly non-traditional and reliably indecorous, Volcano brings you Romeo and Juliet as you are unlikely to have seen it before. But don’t worry – we have all the requisite poisonings, stabbings and suicides and plenty of passion, plus great music and video and a guest appearance from Barbie and Ken. The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is at Townhill Theatre from Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th October at 7:30pm.
