Theatr Iolo has won the award for Best Theatre Production for Children and Young People at the Tron Awards in Glasgow.

MSP for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Patricia Ferguson, presented this coveted award to Theatr Iolo’s Artistic Director Kevin Lewis at the ceremony in Glasgow this week.

Bison & Sons, by Pauline Mol and translated by Rina Vergano had been nominated after performances were seen in Scotland last year during Imaginate, the International Children’s Theatre Festival in Edinburgh. Theatr Iolo was invited to bring this production to the festival in 2003, and held performances alongside other prestigious companies from the UK, Europe and North America.

Bison & Sons was directed by Kevin Lewis and performed by actors Tom Englishby, Steve Hickman and Emyr John. The production toured to schools in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan in 2000 and again in 2003, with performances in high schools, special schools and youth clubs.

The company received glowing reviews in Edinburgh, Glasgow and on the Shetland Islands after performances at Imaginate 2004. In the words of one of the audience at the Tron Theatre:

I took my 13 yr old son to see Bison at the Glasgow Tron last night. I could bore for Scotland [or Wales for that matter] about how brilliant we thought those actors were. The play itself and the sheer energy, enthusiasm and professionalism of those lads, was truly magnificent. They were simply inspiring.
