Arts Council of Wales announces new Drama strategy for Wales consultation document

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) is planning to increase its support to two national theatre companies in Wales following the announcement of a new strategy for the future development of drama in Wales. The proposals are highlighted in a consultation document published today (21 January) which sets out ACW's proposals and invites views from theatre practitioners, local authorities and venues in Wales. Announcing the plans, ACW Chief Executive, Joanna Weston, said, "This is a radical and far reaching strategy. It became clear from our general consultation on ACW's support for the arts that the solutions to the problems facing professional drama in Wales would need to be radical. The changes mean we will be able to support a range of professional drama of which the people of Wales will be proud."

Proposals for implementation in the autumn include:

increasing funding to Clwyd Theatr Cymru to produce work of high artistic quality in English.
proposing a new Welsh language producing theatre powerhouse * increasing the money available for drama projects enabling more work to be produced
offering franchises to provide theatre for young people. These franchises will be advertised and create a strong network of four companies able to meet school and general audience needs across Wales
improving links between venues and companies for the benefit of audiences
focusing support for new writing and artform research
improving support schemes for drama practitioners
creating substantial long term work opportunities for theatre artists
Michael Baker, ACW Artform Development Director commented, "Changes to the drama sector have been high on our agenda for some time and there was strong support for change during our general consultation. The proposals will enable a new and strong foundation for theatre to develop and provide a better service to the people of Wales. Unfortunately this means tough decisions for some companies who may decide to wind up or re-structure. The funding of fewer companies better is in ACW's view a painful but necessary step."

ACW will be giving a commitment to supporting all existing drama revenue clients until the end of September 1999 and will announce the final funding decisions following the consultation period.
