Broken and Blue

This is from the BBC web site:

We're very pleased to reveal that the writer Laurence Allan has won Broken and Blue. His proposal I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Shout charts the life of Buddy Bolden, the trumpeter who reputedly 'invented' jazz and died in a mental asylum aged fifty-five in 1931.

Focusing on his journey from Cardiff to New York, his music is re-imagined in a modern idiom – no recording of his music survives. I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Shout will be given a full BBC commission by Radio 3, and broadcast in Drama on 3 in 2005/2006.

The writer James Mavor who submitted a psychological thriller entitled Vanishing Point is also being commissioned to write for the Radio 3’s monthly drama strand The Wire.

Abigail Appleton, Head of Speech Programmes, Radio 3: "We were thrilled with the quality and quantity of entries and the short-listed writers all offered distinctive proposals".

Kate Rowland, Creative Director, New Writing, on Laurence Allan: "This was a fresh and original drama reinventing the musical form which had strong characters embedded in the music."

Kate Rowland on James Mavor: "James has created a strong psychological thriller where the music is an essential component for the drama."

Kate Rowland on Nicola Baldwin: "Nicola Baldwin’s original idea focusing on an issue for our time narrowly lost out."

A nationwide call for new music drama for Radio 3 produced a fantastic haul of over 400 submissions with a real range and mix of submissions, so thanks to everyone who entered.

Open to all, the competition invited writers to submit a proposal (and the opening ten-fifteen minutes of script) for an exciting and original new music drama for radio. The judges included opera / theatre director Phyllida Lloyd, actor / writer Lennie James and composer Harvey Brough.
