BBC Cardiff Singer of the World

BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Camilla Roberts will start her bid to become Wales’ first winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World on Wednesday, June 15.

The Wrexham-born soprano will take to the St David’s Hall stage that evening in her preliminary round concert to try to secure a place in the final for the coveted title on Sunday, June 19.

In that preliminary round concert Camilla will be singing head-to-head against singers representing Georgia, Moldova, Denmark and New Zealand.

Camilla, like most of this year’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World contestants, has also opted to take part in the separate BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Rosenblatt Recital Series Song Prize.

Her concert performance in that competition in two days earlier, on Monday, June 13, at the New Theatre, Cardiff.

Formerly the Leider Prize, the competition has twice been won by Welsh singers: Bryn Terfel in 1989 and then by Neal Davies in 1991. The only country to have won both the main prize and the Song Prize is the Romanian Marius Brenciu in 2001.

This year the Song Prize has its own grand final at St David’s Hall on Friday, June 17. In the past the winner was selected from concert performances held during the week at the New Theatre and named at the end of the St David’s Hall BBC Singer of the World final in St David’s Hall.

In her Song Prize concert Camilla will be sharing the stage with all the singers she will be competing against in her main prize concert, with the exception of the Danish singer who is not taking part in the Song Prize. Instead the fifth contestant will be the 30-yar-old Korean soprano Ha-Young Lee.
