The New Theatre is at the very forefront of new technology by becoming one of the first theatres in the UK to launch an RSS feed from its website. Visitors to www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk can now subscribe for free to receive up-to-date listings on their PC or Mac desktop. Using either an RSS enabled browser (these include Opera, Firefox and Safari) or a ‘News Reader’ downloaded from the internet, the RSS feed will update the venue’s What’s On information, ensuring theatregoers never miss out on any future show. The popular Cardiff venue, which will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2006, offers two RSS feeds, one in English and the other in Welsh. The New Theatre’s website is already bilingual and the facility to subscribe to the RSS feed requires only locating the distinctive orange RSS button which features on most pages. Alternatively the feed can be directly accessed at: http://www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk/rss/index.html The New Theatre joins only a relatively small number of organisations currently offering RSS feeds. These include such prestigious organisations as the BBC, CNN, New York Times and International Herald Tribune. The technology is expected to greatly increase in popularity in the coming months and eventually become almost as widespread as internet use itself. It is believed that the New Theatre is only the second UK theatre to offer this facility to its customers. Matt Smith, the New Theatre’s Marketing Manager, comments “We are delighted to offer our customers this brand new way of keeping up with our forthcoming shows. Now to instantly see a full listing of our performances, it’s as simple as looking into your News Reader or browser and it’s all there. I am especially pleased that we are one of the very first theatres in the UK to offer this technology. The building may be approaching its century, but the New is firmly rooted in the 21st century.” The New Theatre intends the RSS feed to complement the venue’s website. It will run alongside the site which currently attracts in the region of 13,000 unique visitors a month. |
