CPR presents RANAN in a performance, a talk/presentation and a concert: CROSSINGS – Saturday 2 July, 8pm TALK/PRESENTATION – Monday 4 July, 8pm CONCERT by Nageen Tanvir – Friday 8 July As part of its international summer school this year, the Aberystwyth based Centre for Performance Research (CPR), is presenting Indian dance-theatre company Ranan on their first visit to Wales and the UK. Alongside a 6 day workshop, Ranan will also present three public events at Aberystwyth’s Castle Theatre: a performance, CROSSINGS on Saturday 2 July; a TALK/PRESENTATION on Monday 4 July and a special CONCERT by company member, NAGEEN TANVIR on Friday 8 July. Crossings weaves together the Indian dance forms of Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Manipuri alongside the text based drama of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, exploring strong female figures of Indian mythology such as Putana and Shakti. Four performers represent different facets of Lady Macbeth in constant flux and conflict, examining what it means to be feminine and de-femininised. “ … riveting interplay of power and passion through Kathak, Manipuri, Bharatanatyam.” Review of Crossings, The Telegraph, Calcutta. Ranan is a young performance company set up by Kathak dancers Debashree Bhattacharya and Vikram Iyengar. Their collaboration has led to a shared conviction that a traditional art form like Kathak is a constantly evolving and living element capable of communicating with any audience regardless of age and cultural background. They will talk about their work to date and their plans for the future on Monday 4 July. As part of the same programme there is a special concert by another member of the company, Nageen Tanvir - daughter of theatre veterans Moneek and Habib Tanvir – who presents an evening of Indian Classical Folk and Tribal Songs on Friday 8 July. The programme of Indian performance also provides a welcome return to Aberystwyth for Ranan co-Director, Vikram Iyengar who is a former post-graduate student in the Theatre, Film and Television Department at UWA.
