The latest theatre, dance and performance news

After the Birds

Cardiff-based performance company Earthfall are known for their stunning fusion of dance, theatre and live music. More than that, over the last sixteen years they have established a reputation for pushing the boundaries of their work through a series of unique collaboration with writers, artists, film-makers and musicians.

In 2003 they began working with an innovative group from Poland called the Theatre Association Chorea, an offshoot of the internationally known Polish performance company Gardzienice. Intensive rehearsals in Poland and Cardiff led to a series of sell-out performances and the firm desire to continue the collaboration between Wales’ leading dance theatre company and the extraordinary young choir from Poland.

Their latest partnership, a production drawn from Aristophanes’ comedy, The Birds forms part of Cardiff’s centenary celebrations and can be seen in the intimate theatre space at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff for four nights from Wednesday 7th September.

After the Birds follows a group of rebels who attempt to create a new, pure, uncorrupted society halfway between humans and the gods. In this vision of a comedic non-conformist utopia and with reference to a politically unified but still divided Europe, the departure from one jaded and corrupt society leads to the formation of a seemingly new jaded and corrupt society inevitably involved in imposing heavy limitations and conditions.

This pioneering theatre performance work has been created using transcribed ancient Greek songs and chant alongside contemporary music. The main elements of the performance include a uniquely physical choir, live film and live music, creating a truly must-see spectacle.

Director of the Polish Cultural Institute, Malgorzata Szum said:
“We are thrilled to support the premiere of this new collaboration, and to be associated once again with these two great companies of international standing. It gives us great pleasure to see the continued development of this creative partnership with companies at the forefront of the cultural lives of their respective countries.”

Director of the Cultural Programme for Cardiff 2005, Yvette Vaughan Jones said:
“Cardiff 2005 is delighted to be supporting this unique partnership, and we’re very proud to have companies of such high calibre as part of the Cardiff 2005 celebrations.”

After The Birds marks the start of a very busy time for Earthfall. The day after the last performance at Chapter sees the company leave Cardiff for the start of the Autumn tour of their acclaimed show At Swim, Two Boys. The tour begins with a 5-night run at The Dublin Fringe festival, followed by a 7-week UK tour before a 2-week tour of The Netherlands taking in 8 venues across the country.

After the birds will be at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff from 7-10 September. Tickets are on sale now from their Box office on 029 2030 4400 with tickets priced from £6.
