See Hamlet for Free

In an unprecedented move the New Theatre, Wales Theatre Company and Cardiff Council have joined forces to offer free tickets to the people of Cardiff, Wales and beyond. A cutting-edge production of Hamlet is being presented to the city as part of Cardiff’s 100th birthday celebrations.

Centenary events run throughout the day and businesses, schools and the arts venues around the city are playing their part. To that end the New Theatre has set an extraordinary precedent by offering tickets for the latest acclaimed production of Hamlet free of charge for the whole run between 2-12 November.

The Wales Theatre Company was formed 3 years ago. This is their third visit to the New Theatre and this production marks an exciting new chapter in their work. As well as performing the play in Shakespeare’s original English, there will be 2 performances of the play in a new Welsh language translation by Gareth Miles.

The free tickets offer is valid for all performances in both languages and ticket numbers are limited only by availability. The only stipulation is that tickets taken up on this offer are used. People who have already booked tickets will be contacted by the New Theatre to be offered an alternative deal.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said: “I am delighted that the New Theatre will be playing such a key role in Cardiff’s Centenary celebrations by inviting everyone to see this exciting production of Hamlet for free. I would like to thank our partners Cardiff 2005, the Millennium Commission and Wales Theatre Company for their invaluable assistance in making this wonderful offer a reality. I urge everyone to come along and be a part of the celebrations.”

Hamlet Director Michael Bogdanov comments: “It is a real honour to be part of the Cardiff Centenary celebrations. I hope that fans of Shakespeare, people new to his work and people who perhaps have never been to the theatre before will take advantage of this exceptional offer.”

Hamlet is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Wednesday 2 – Saturday 12 November before continuing its tour of Wales. Free tickets are available from 10am Thursday 27 October from the Box Office on Cardiff (029) 2087 8889 or online at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk Online transactions will carry the venue’s usual small transaction fee of £1.50
