9/11; 7/7 Gripping New Drama Comes To The Sherman

Set in the shadow of terrorism, a gripping new play presents a unique perspective on the clash between young Muslims and the West. Based on a true story, Trashed comes to The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff for two performances only on 23-24 November at 7.30pm.

When the planes tore into the Twin Towers, two women’s lives collided. Ruhela, a young British Muslim, reluctantly agrees to meet Mississippi-born Louisa in a run-down park. This confrontation could be the last chance for reconciliation with the past and with each other. In an atmosphere that is full of bomb scares, police sirens and mistrust, the two women relive the summer of 2001 in New York and the memories that preceded that fateful day of September 11.

In light of the events of July 7 here in Britain, Trashed highlights the highly relevant and burning political and cultural issues facing us today. These issues of class, culture and religion along with global politics seep through a narrative of personal grief, confrontation and understanding. A unique soundtrack including the New World Symphony combined with cool, jazzy original music provides the backdrop for this politically potent and emotionally charged production which “hit[s] the heart right where it beats.” (The Stage)

Trashed stars Hema Mangoo, who appears in the BBC Asian Network’s popular radio drama Silverstreet, and Maggie O’Brien, nominee of this year’s Manchester Evening Post’s prestigious Best Actress Award. Theatre Centre has been creating and touring new theatre for over 50 years. Trashed is unsuitable for under 14s.

Trashed will be at The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff on 23-24 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 (£8 Reductions) and can be booked from the Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
