HIJINX THEATRE’S 2006 SILVER JUBILEE BIRTHDAY PRODUCTIONS

In 2006 Hijinx Theatre celebrate their 25th birthday. For the last 25 years Hijinx have toured original, innovative and accessible theatre into communities throughout Wales and England.

Hijinx Theatre has always had a strong commitment to new writing and touring to rural communities, principles we continue to uphold. We are also delighted to tour our work to small and middle scale arts venues.

One strand of work has been for adults with learning disabilities and their community, providing thought provoking and pertinent productions across Wales and England.

In our Silver Jubilee year we are delighted to be employing a performer with Downs syndrome in our spring show Seize the Day, which will be directed by our Artistic Director and founder member Gaynor Lougher.

Seize The Day is a new play set in the 1930s in the house of a rich aristocratic family Lord and Lady Webb, where hierarchy is strong and you know your place. A new young maid, Mary joins the kitchen staff in the lowest position in the house. Mary is seen as someone with no hope of advancement or marriage, in complete contrast to the beautiful but wilful daughter of the house – Miss Julie. Resisting the demarcation of society, and with the help of a good friend, Mary rises above all expectations….

Perceptions will be challenged, obstacles will be overcome, and prejudices will be re-evaluated in this thought provoking tale of breaking out. This play will be of particular interest to people within the learning disabled community.

We welcome Rosamunde Hutt, Hijinx’s first Artistic Director, back to direct Estella’s Fire in the autumn.

Estella's Fire will tell an entirely new story, where she becomes the heroine of her own fascinating narrative. As a young girl Estella was sent to live with an eccentrically reclusive old woman. She is locked away from the world, behind gated walls in a place where time stands still. Everything is far from ordinary, until the hidden needs and desires of this vulnerable girl are awakened by the arrival of 'the boy' from beyond the gate. Join Estella on an emotional journey from childhood to adulthood as she struggles to act on her own feelings rather than the motives forced on her by others. Can Estella rise from the ashes to become a strong and empowered young woman?

Hijinx continue to offer the thrill of live theatre; bringing to life characters, themes and issues which are relevant, challenging and inspiring.

Alongside these professional productions, our participatory group Odyssey Theatre will be making their bi-annual trip to the Weston Studio stage at the Wales Millennium Centre with a summer extravaganza and a Christmas show.
