It’s Back…The Play That Shocked the Nineties

It’s Back…The Play That Shocked the Nineties The shockingly funny cult play Trainspotting that inspired the movie sensation comes to The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff from 6 – 11 February 2006, as part of a 10th Anniversary Tour.

One of the most powerful and influential theatre shows of recent times, Trainspotting takes its audience on a roller-coaster ride through the streets, pubs and darkest recesses of Edinburgh low-life. Friends Renton, Tommy, Sick Boy and Begbie embark on a horrific journey to the heart of a hell-hole world peopled by psychos, junkies, wide-boys and no-hopers. Hilarious but harrowing, it charts the disintegration of their friendship as they hurtle towards self-destruction. Only Mark has the insight and opportunity to escape his own fate but then again, does he really want to ‘choose life’?

Sordid, explicit, exuberant, devastating – Irvine Welsh’s infamous 1993 novel introduced the uninitiated to the dizzying heights and unbearable depths of life as a ‘trainspotter’. Adapted by Harry Gibson into a play that, even more than the book and the film, is the most extreme. In 1996 it took the theatre world by storm and played to sell out audiences and critical acclaim all over Britain. Made into a hit film in 1996 starring Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle, Trainspotting is firmly established as a cult classic of the nineties. Ten years on, it is still as thrillingly alive and frighteningly relevant as it was back then. This production contains nudity and scenes that may shock and is not suitable for children.

The opening night of Trainspotting on Monday 6 February will kick off the run at The Sherman with a special opening night party. Camera, a new up-and-coming band from Wrexham, North Wales, will perform their new single “Out On The Water” which is out at the end of January as part of a live set before the performance.

Trainspotting is on at The Sherman Theatre from Monday 6 – Saturday 11 February. Tickets are just £16 (Reductions £14) and can be booked from the Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
