ARTS COUNCIL OF WALES

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) has announced that it will deliver a new strategy for drama in Wales. This follows a period of consultation during which views were invited from theatre practitioners, local authorities and venues in Wales. Details of the final drama strategy were agreed at a meeting of ACW’s Council on Friday March 19th 1999.

The drama strategy includes implementing:

increased funding to Clwyd Theatr Cymru to produce and tour work of high artistic quality in English for touring and presentation across Wales.

a new Welsh language producing and touring theatre powerhouse based in Gwynedd.

increased money for innovative drama projects.

a new national framework to supply professional theatre tailored to the needs of young people.

new roles for building based theatre producers (Sherman Theatre, Cardiff and the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven).

focused support for new writing and artform research.

improved support schemes for drama practitioners.

substantial long term work opportunities for theatre artists.
Members of ACW’s Council considered the wide range of written and other responses received during the drama strategy consultation which ended earlier this month.

ACW Chief Executive, Joanna Weston commented, "Many of the views were passionate and constructive and Council and its advisory panels took a long time to consider the many important and useful points made. Council took the decision to amend aspects of the strategy in the light of consultation responses, but remains committed to delivering a new vision for drama in Wales that will provide a better, more sustainable service to the people of Wales.’

ACW’s Council members agreed that:

provision for people with disabilities must be safeguarded, and the expertise of Hijinx Theatre in this area should not be lost to Wales. ACW has agreed to offer Hijinx Theatre a full year revenue grant for 1999/2000 and negotiate a two year funding agreement with the company until the end of March 2001.
as part of its strategy, professional community theatre should be reviewed. This issue has been raised by a number of respondents to the consultation process.

that more time is needed for ACW to work in partnership with local authorities on theatre for young people in order to achieve the best possible arrangement to deliver this work. ACW has decided therefore to support the current eight company network of companies for a full financial year to end March 2000.
Notes to Journalists:
1. A summary of the responses to the consultation on the draft drama strategy will be published by ACW.
2. As a result of these decisions, ACW will go ahead with offering grants to drama organisations and these will be announced shortly.
