“We have prepared a great season of opera for you in 2006/7, as we celebrate our 60th anniversary. WNO’s residency at WMC means we can bring the best of Wales to the rest of the World – and the best of the world to Wales. I will be conducting La Bohème with an almost all-Welsh cast: the internationally renowned Welsh Soprano Rebecca Evans performs her first Mimi, support by fellow Welsh opera stars Charlotte Ellett, Gwyn Hughes Jones and Jason Howard .”Carlo Rizzi (Musical Director) THE RETURN OF ULYSSES Monteverdi Saturday 16 & Saturday 23 September This production is based on an original concept develop by Bavarian State Opera in Munich and is a co-production with The Royal Danish Opera. Paul Nilon sings the title role with a creative team including renowned conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini and sought-after director David Alden. Witty, eccentric, dramatic and spectacular – WNO’s production of The Return of Ulysses is a modern representation of the extravagance of the theatrical language of the baroque. LA BOHÈME Puccini Friday 15 Sunday 17 Friday 29 September, Tuesday 3 & Thursday 5 October Since its premiere in Italy in 1896 La Bohème has been recognised as the most direct and touching of Puccini’s operas. Living in romantic poverty, the musical story of love and hardship amongst the bohemians has touched generations of audiences with its poignancy, universal appeal and its supreme melodic beauty. “… one of the WNO’s best investments. It is traditional…lively and full of tellingly observed detail thanks to Michael Yeargan’s atmospheric chilly sets.” The Times CHORUS! Monday 2 Wednesday 4 & Friday 6 October A showpiece for the world-acclaimed Chorus of the Welsh National Opera. Created in 2004 as a piece of work to introduce opera to those who have not experienced opera before; demand from regular opera audiences to see Chorus! has been so high, we are delighted to present three performances this season. TRISTAN and ISOLDE Wagner Saturday 30 September & Saturday 7 October A musical experience of great intensity, the elemental power and staggering beauty of this masterpiece promises to remain with you. “… this is a Tristan superior in every respect…” Sunday Telegraph A co-production with Scottish Opera |
