Ryan..and Ronnie Scoops Two Major Awards!

Sgript Cymru, the new writing company for Wales have been awarded the Best English Language Production and Best Actor awards for their sell out tour of Life of Ryan…and Ronnie by Meic Povey. Actor Aled Pugh was awarded the Best Actor award for his captivating performance of Ryan.

The awards are presented by the Theatre in Wales website, an invaluable point of reference and discussion for all those involved in arts in Wales.

Life of Ryan…and Ronnie has already proven a huge success for Sgript Cymru, receiving excellent reviews and box office attendance.

The Show was an epic performance of 70s suits, flared shirt collars and velvet bow ties. With fondness, honesty and a little bit of cabaret, writer Meic Povey charted the dynamic highs and lows of the Ryan and Ronnie magic, culminating in the night when the curtain fell on the pair for the very last time.

Artistic Director of Sgript Cymru and Director of the production, Simon Harris was delighted at the awards,

“This is the ninth time in five years that Sgript Cymru has won a Theatre in Wales Award, but this award is special. It’s a particular pleasure to receive an award for Best English Language Production as it recognises every element of Life of Ryan… and Ronnie – set, lighting, direction, performances and writing. The success of the production is shared by everyone involved – from the administration and crew to the production team – all of whom were hugely inspired by Meic Povey’s beautiful play. It is an additional delight that Aled Pugh has won a richly-deserved Best Actor award for his performance as Ryan, but Aled would be the first to pay tribute to fellow actor, Kai Owen. Their joint talent and chemistry helped make them an outstanding double act.”

The production toured eleven venues in total during November and December 2005, including performances at the Wales Millennium Centre and the Cochrane Theatre in London. The reaction from audiences around each of the venues was fantastic and many people felt that it had brought the comedy duo perfectly to life.

Actor Aled Pugh who was praised by acting legend Philip Madoc for his accurate portrayal of Ryan, was ecstatic when he heard the news,

“I was absolutely delighted, it was great to win the Best Actor award but part of the reason the show was so successful was the partnership between myself and Kai, from day one there was a magic that just worked on stage, it was fantastic to be on stage with him and every performance was fresh and different.”

Aled who was already a fan of Ryan said that the production had endeared him even more to the star,

“I’m even more of a fan of Ryan now; the production meant that I came away with a much deeper understanding of Ryan the person rather than the performer. It was a fantastic experience.”

Sgript Cymru are extremely pleased at the shows success and are grateful that audiences have voted with their computers as well as their feet!
