Saturday 25 March 2006 at 7.30pm Melville Theatre, Pen-y-Pound Abergavenny Fresh on the heels of Harold Pinter’s latest award – the prestigious Europe Theatre Prize presented this month – come two of his plays to Abergavenny. The European Arts Company are bringing a double-bill of black comedies to the Melville Theatre in Pen-y-Pound, Abergavenny as part of their national tour next Saturday, 25 March. The plays, ‘A Slight Ache’ and ‘The Lover’ are both early works and should be of interest both to students of English and drama and to those who enjoy a visit to the theatre. Pinter has now won a string of awards on top of the Nobel Prize for Literature including the Wilfred Owen prize and the Franz Kafka prize . Both of his productions by the European Arts Company have been praised during their tour. ‘A Slight Ache’ features the behaviour of a couple called Flora and Edward who try to discover the identity of an old matchseller hanging about outside their home. The mysterious old man evokes irrational fear and suspicion which bring hilarious and shattering consequences. ‘The Lover’ appears to be a lighter piece featuring a staid, middle-class couple of 10 years. But while Richard commutes into the City, his wife Sarah shows her lover ‘the hollyhocks’. All is not quite as it seems as dark fantasy and banal reality converge to dizzying effect. Under Richard Roylance’s sensitive direction, there is the well-paced cut and thrust of sharp and witty dialogue. The European Arts Company comes to Abergavenny by arrangement with Gwent Theatre, supported by the Arts Council of Wales ‘Night Out’ scheme and in partnership with Monmouthshire County Council. Tickets are £6 and £4 and available in advance from the Borough Theatre Box Office, Abergavenny, 01873 850805. Further information tel 01873 853167 |
