TWO THEATRES, TWO CLASSICS

Magic, Memories and Rock and Roll are all coming to Cardiff as Wales Millennium Centre and the New Theatre will soon lift the curtain on two Andrew Lloyd Webber musical classics, Starlight Express and CATS.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's longest running and best loved West End musicals will, for the first time, be enjoyed on a Welsh stage with Starlight Express starting its run at Wales Millennium Centre from 11-29 April followed by CATS in the New Theatre from 20 June-15 July.

The UK tour of Starlight Express has been amazing audiences of all ages since the show finished its 18 year run in the West end in 2002 and tells the futuristic tale of young love in the face of adversity. The revamped production includes new songs by David Yazbek who also composed the musical score of the Full Monty and combines state of the art 3-D virtual reality technology, electrifying music, film and of course, high speed roller skating.

CATS is the longest running British musical and closed in the West End exactly 21 years after it opened in the New London Theatre. This classic production has wowed over 65 million people worldwide, has been staged in more than 150 cities and translated into 14 languages. From Old Deuteronomy to Magical Mr Mistoffeleese, the wonder of CATS is a sight to behold and this UK tour will bring the history, the music and the colour of the world’s favourite musical back to life.

Wales Millennium Centre’s Chief Executive Judith Isherwood explains, “Starlight Express is Wales Millennium Centre’s first ever Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, something which we, and the people of Wales, are delighted about as tickets are proving extremely popular. Audiences are most definitely spoilt for choice this year.”

New Theatre’s Manager Susan Lewis adds “We have had Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals here in the past including Evita, Tell Me On A Sunday and Jesus Christ Superstar, but this is the first time CATS has made its way to the New Theatre. We are extremely happy with the amount of interest shown to date in the production and advise people to book early.”

Following the spectacular first birthday events of Wales Millennium Centre last November, it is now the turn of the New Theatre to celebrate as 2006 marks their centennial year. Both venues have a diverse programme of events and offer new and exciting opportunities for audiences in Wales to enjoy performances such as these two musical greats.
