Lunchtime theatre comes to Swansea

Lunchtime theatre comes to Swansea Fluellen Theatre Company will be bringing regular Lunchtime Theatre to Swansea for the first time when it embarks on a 5 play repertoire at the city`s Dylan Thomas Centre.

Fluellen has established itself as a classical theatre company in its five years at Swansea`s Grand Theatre Arts Wing, and that is set to continue, Artistic Director Peter Richards sees this new venture as complimentary to its main programming as the Lunchtime Theatre series will be concentrating on new, short drama.

At 1.00pm every Saturday during April, May and June, Fluellen will present a repertory of five plays. All but one of the productions will be premieres and four of them will be by local writers.

During the 1980s Peter Richards ran the successful Britannia Pub Theatre in London that became well-known for its policy of producing new drama. Peter hopes and believes that the same policy will work in Swansea. “There is a growing and vibrant arts scene in the city” he says “and I am greatly impressed by the standard of the plays that have been submitted. Unfortunately I can only stage five, but if this three-month season proves successful then Lunchtime Theatre will become a regular feature and we will be able to stage more plays”

The five plays that will be playing in repertory are TICKY TOCK by Sam Thomas, ROCKET MAN by Phil Stockton, THE OUTLAW DORIS WELLS by Keith Rees & Paul Lewis, NEVER SAY NEVER SAY NEVER by Geoff Saunders and BURIED BEFORE TELEVISION by Geraint Thomas.

The latter play opens the season on April 1st and will be receiving just one performance. It was critically acclaimed when, under its original title “After Milk Wood”, it played at the Clyne Farm Festival last year and later at the Dylan Thomas Festival. Inspired by “Under Milk Wood” it takes a humorous and searching look at a small village in contemporary Wales.

Lunchtime Theatre commences every Saturday at 1.00pm at the Dylan Thomas Centre, Somerset Place, Swansea. Seat prices are £5 and £3 concessions. Box Office number is 01792 463980
